Mango wood is an important source of income in the north of Thailand, and is a renewable resource. It is used to make some of the most popular Thai handicrafts.
It is used for making furniture, vases, bowls, candle holders and jewelry like bangles and earrings.
Bamboo is used in countless ways, including furniture, home decor and art works. We are especially fond of the bamboo rice containers, available in many different shapes, sizes, colors and designs. They look great around the home or office and are very popular in the hotel and restaurant industries.
Saa paper is another locally produced craft material which can be used
to make a wide range of useful and attractive items.
Many Thai people rely on the production and sales of saa paper as their sole source of income, and it is an environmentally friendly renewable resource.
It makes wonderful gift wrapping paper, and is a natural medium for
drawing and painting.
Also it is used to make such things as gift boxes, photo albums,
greeting cards, carry bags, notepads and book covers. When specially
treated it is also used to make parasols and umbrellas.
Saa paper is made from the bark of the young mulberry tree branches. The
bark is dried thoroughly to remove the sap, then soaked in water until
the bark is softened. This "mush" is then boiled in a blend of caustic
soda and water, the caustic soda aiding the "breakdown" of the fibers.
Following this boiling process the mixture is then rinsed to remove the
soda, and the remainder is sieved to collect the fibers which are then
dried in the sun on drying racks.
Colors can be added during the manufacturing process by way of natural
vegetable dyes.
Designs, labels, company logos etc. can be applied to the saa paper
after it has dried.
Wholesale inquiries regarding saa paper or anything made from saa paper
are welcome.
